COVID-19 has tested the humanitarian community and its ability to help people in crisis. Communities across the nation have come forward to quickly adapt so that life-saving efforts are maintained and support the neediest in the societies where we live.
Roar 4 Change, a 501 (c) (3), charity organization team also stepped up to support the community to fight COVID-19. On May 4th, 2022, the Roar 4 Change team has completed 1000th FREE grocery food deliveries for the seniors and people with special needs across Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) community.
The journey of 1000th FREE grocery food delivery is truly an example of teamwork and execution. It is not about one individual, but how we can make difference when a team comes together. How coordination and having mutual respect, common and aligned goals, open communication and patience can make impact in what ever we do in our journey of life.
How we started & Our Focus:
When the pandemic started, we quickly approached the local authorities to understand the need and where we could assist. We reached out to the local police departments and other charity organizations to understand the gaps and the support the community residents are looking to fight COVID-19. We quickly found that it was the seniors and the people with special needs would be our focus.
We started reaching out to local senior housing authorities via phone and emails. We started reaching out to the community via social media on how they could reach us and what we can offer.
Procurement & Purchase:
Initially we were purchasing as per the call request we were getting from the seniors. Soon, we found that the basic requirements were same for all. We started purchasing the non-perishable items in advance. Our basic delivery includes the following:
- Milk (Gallon)
- Box of Cereal
- A dozen eggs
- Canned beans (4-5 cans)
- Ramen Noodles (4-5 packets)
- Paper Towel- 2 Rolls
- Toilet Paper- 4 Rolls
We have been also delivering as per the senior’s diet needs. But in general, above 9 items are being delivered to the seniors or person with special needs who have been calling for support.
After few weeks when we started delivering, we quickly formed two teams. One a procurement team and another a delivery team. The procurement team would purchase and deliver to the volunteers in the delivery team. The volunteers in the delivery team would use the stock as they were delivery to the seniors. This way we not only optimized the purchase but also the delivery mechanism. We have spent an average of $21/per delivery of the above grocery items.
Delivery & Reach
Based on the location of the senior, we map the nearest Roar 4 Change team member and request them to deliver the food to the senior. The below map illustrates how we have been covering the entire Dallas Fort Worth area with our deliveries.
